Should Video Technology Be Introduced In Football?

The debate about the need for video replays in Football will not go away. The governing bodies wish it would, but with every offside goal scored, every incorrect call on the goal line and every dive that wins a penalty, the clamor grows stronger.

For years the game has been built around respect for the referee and a general understanding that his decision is final. Should replays come in, this would no longer be the case. A referee could make a call, the decision could go to a video replay and he could be proved wrong.

Video technology has been a hot topic these last couple of years after the infamous Frank Lampard disallowed goal against Germany at the 2010 world cup in South Africa. That was probably one of the worst decisions I had ever witnessed, as I cursed the referee calling him every name under the sun. The video replays showed the ball had clearly crossed the line, but because the referee and the linesman couldn’t see this they disallowed the goal. This forced Fifa to look into the possibility of including goal-line technology into football for the near future. They are currently undertaking tests to implement a system within the next couple of years. But would goal-line technology be enough? I don’t think so. It is impossible for referees and the linesman to see everything so they need help.
But, UEFA President Michel Platini has expressed his views on the matter, saying that football is a "human game", in which mistakes are inevitable. With such a stubborn man in a position of power, the chances of a change in the foreseeable future are slim.

Many mistakes that referee do in football game, like offside goal, dive and pinalty, handball, is it no matter because football is the beautiful game has a natural ebb and flow, the speed and end to end nature of the game should be interrupted as little as possible. Do we want to stop the game for every debatable decision. Was it a handball, did the defender play the ball or take out the man, which way should the throw in be awarded, should it be a corner or a goal kick, was the forward marginally offside or not et.. Where would it end? Referees and linesmen are human and therefore cannot be perfect but if there is consent that we accept their decisions, right or wrong then we can preserve the essence of the game. Its not all about winning otherwise fans would not support those teams that have not enjoyed success for decades.

Football is about art, not about science and law. Think of a football world without Lampard’s disallowed goal, and Henry's handball, without Diego Maradona's "Hand of God", and without Geoff Hurst's goal. Sounds dull and boring, doesn't it?
I think bringing in video technology would be a step in the right direction to eliminate the natural human error, but a step in the wrong direction in regards to the excitement football brings and everything that made football become great.
